Help readers get in touch with an X account. Show where to ask a public question and where to send a private message.
Why use this pattern?
Readers want to ask your team something. Your team answers on X.
On this page, readers can ask in public or in private. The Mention Button opens a new post on X. The Message Button opens a private message. Readers choose whether to send. Some accounts do not take messages.
Live example
Below is a sample contact page. Imagine Atlassian’s social team made it. The team wrote the text. The Mention Button and the Message Button come from X Connector. Both are live.
Ask Atlassian on X
Who answers
Our social team answers questions on X. Ask about our products, events and news.
Ask a public question on X
Everyone can see your question and our answer.
Send a private message on X
Only you and our team see the message.
Need help with a product?
For help with your site or account, use Atlassian Support, not X.
Try it: select each button. X opens in a new tab. One button starts a new post to @Atlassian. The other opens a private message. You write and send it from your own account.
Before you start
-
You can edit the page. You have the contact’s X profile URL or @username.
-
Mention Button does not need an X API key.
-
Message Button needs the site key to find an ID from a username. If you know the ID, you can use it without a key. Use the ID made of digits.
Build the page
-
Create a contact page. Say who answers questions and what readers can ask.
-
Add “Ask a public question on X”. Follow Add a Mention Button using the account’s profile URL or @username.
-
Add “Send a private message on X”. Follow Add a Message Button using the same account or its correct numeric ID.
-
Add short text in Prefilled post text or Prefilled message text. Say which choice is public and which is private.
-
For help with your product, link to your usual support portal. Then publish or update a regular page.
Check before sharing
Choose each button. Check that it opens the right account on X. Readers choose what to do there. They may need to sign in. The account may block messages, so a message may not get through. Keep support requests in your usual support system.
