Confluence intranet without Premium

What you can build on Standard and Free, and what it costs you in upkeep

Confluence works as an intranet on any plan. How much work it takes depends on which plan you are on. Company Hub, the landing page Atlassian ships for this job, comes with Premium and Enterprise only. On Standard and Free you assemble something from the parts every Confluence site has.

This page covers what those parts are, what they cost you in upkeep, and where a Marketplace app helps.

🟦 What Company Hub does, and who gets it

Company Hub is one company-wide landing page for announcements, news and curated links. Atlassian builds it into Confluence Cloud, so there is nothing to install, no vendor security review and no second bill.

Two limits matter while you are planning.

Company Hub comes with Premium and Enterprise plans and is not available on Standard or Free. Editing is restricted to admins and delegated editors, so employees read the page rather than post to it.

If you are on Premium and you want one curated front door, Company Hub is the right tool and you already own it. Reaching it from Standard means upgrading the whole site to Premium, which is a per-seat uplift across every user, not only the users who would read the hub.

🟨 What you can build on Standard and Free

The usual approach is a space for company updates with a blog post for each announcement. It works and costs nothing extra.

The trouble starts a few months in. Blog posts are ordered by date and nothing else, so there is no category to filter by and no end date. Last quarter's office closure notice sits in the archive looking as current as this morning's. Someone has to clear it out by hand, and often nobody does. People scroll, stop finding what they came for, and stop opening the page.

A page built from macros has the same problem from the other side. You can assemble the filtering yourself, and then you maintain that structure yourself too.

🟩 Where a board app helps

Team Hub is an independent app by eXtensi, not Atlassian's Company Hub. It adds one board to your Confluence site where every post carries an end date. When the date passes, the post closes as Expired and leaves the current board, so the board shows what is still live without anyone clearing it out. A publisher can keep a post longer, reopen it with new dates, or schedule it ahead.

Posting starts from a category. There are 59 ready-to-use categories in 10 groups, from announcements and events to jobs and classifieds, and each one gives the post the fields it needs with a live preview of the card. Employees post themselves. Anyone can report a post or comment in one click, and the moderators a Confluence admin names work through a queue.

To put a single post in front of people on a page they already read, the Team Hub macro renders that post as a live card on any Confluence page, following the page's light or dark theme.

⚠️ Before you plan a rollout

Team Hub runs on Confluence Cloud only, and it is a paid app licensed per Confluence user through the Atlassian Marketplace.

There is one board for the site rather than one per team or space.

Categories come as the app ships them, so editing the category forms is not available yet.

Moderation happens after publication by the people you name, with no automatic filtering and no pre-publication approval.

🤔 Which question are you answering

Company Hub and a board app answer different questions. One is a front door an admin curates. The other is a place employees post to, where posts expire on a date. Sites on Premium sometimes run both, and a site on Standard can add the second without changing its plan.

A board for time-bound posts also does not replace the wiki. Durable documentation stays in Confluence pages; the board carries this week's update.
